Anchorage record store spins off to positive start

Steve Haynes and his wife have recently opened Obsession Records in the hope that a vinyl revival will help them to succeed.

The shop owner has claimed to be realistic about the prospects for his enterprise, aware that a reported boost in vinyl sales might not turn out to be a major shift in the direction of the music industry.

Currently, the store is only open for business for part of the week. However, the number of customers has been encouraging according to Mr. Haynes.

As advertising has been restricted to social media and word-of-mouth since the shop opened before Christmas, business performance has easily exceeded the expectations of the couple in question. Using poster printing in Anchorage might be a positive step forward towards building upon this.

Mr. Haynes has explained how he chooses records for retail purposes, saying:

“The condition is the No. 1 thing I look at. The next thing I look at is rarity. If the record is dinged up, but there was only a couple hundred Copies, it's worth more and I might buy it.”

The couple hopes to take the business to the next level by various means, starting by having the concrete plans to decorate the shop more effectively, and continuing with the desire to host gigs by musicians in the building.

With statistics from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry confirming that vinyl sales went up in 2012, the owners will be hoping they can latch onto the revival.
