A meeting was held last month to discuss the possibility of opening a new farmers’ market in Northeast Anchorage. Should things go as planned, it could open this coming summer.
The meeting was attended by community stakeholders who might be interested in the formation of a market to sell locally grown produce to those living in the community and the surrounding area. Then purpose of the meeting was to find out how much of a need there was for this type of a marketplace and also what the final result should look like.
While there are already several shopping area of this type in the city, there are none in northeast Anchorage. Some community council members, and the office of Senator Bill Wielechowski, believe that one in this area could be very popular and might become a place for people to gather together.
Those who attended the meeting felt that the Spenard market was a good model to follow. There was also discussion about where it should be located. Ease of transportation and proximity to where potential customers live were discussed.
A community-based initiative such as this can have spin off economic benefits for other businesses in the community. For example, a banner printing company can produce Banners and other signage to be used by vendors on market days.Get a Free Quote for Banners
