Anchorage class to teach fundamentals of family law

The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) will hold a training session in Anchorage for attorneys.

The Fundamentals of Family Law and DVSA is a program where attorneys new to practicing family law can learn important field-related information. The topics covered by the instructors include the basics of gender-based violence, trauma-informed client approaches, and an introduction to concepts like custody, visitation, and property division. The training session is intended for attorneys who intend to volunteer with the ANDSVA. Organizations offering classes for attorneys like this may bring promotional Pens to their events to ensure attendees can take notes.

The ANDVSA is an organization that was created in 1980 after five of Alaska’s existing DVSA programs merged into a statewide network to improve the services offered to victims. There are many programs offered by the group, such as transportation services, shelters, support groups, and legal advocacy. People who become members of the ANDVSA can participate in the organization’s training programs and public awareness efforts.

The first family law training session will be held on March 5th from 9:00am to 4:30pm at the BP Energy Center. The second session will take place over Zoom on March 19th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. There is no cost for people to take part in the course, though pre-registration is mandatory.
