Visitor centre proposed for Falkirk landmark

A popular tourist attraction that is situated near Falkirk could be set to have a new visitor centre built next to it, with proposals for this having been submitted to the council for approval.

George Russell Construction is hoping to build this centre near the Dunmore Pineapple, the famous stone folly that is located not far from the town. The company is hoping that Falkirk Council grants the necessary planning permission for it, with the project set to be cross-financed via the building of 82 homes over a two-kilometre parcel of land in the same area.

Although the idea has been met with some opposition from residents, George Russell Construction is arguing that the new centre would draw in more tourists. It has pointed out that there are currently no amenities for visitors at the Pineapple.

Brochure printing shops in Falkirk may prove to be a useful service if this centre gets the green light, as Brochures explaining the story behind the Pineapple will be needed.

Councillors expressed support for an earlier application that would have seen the centre and 22 homes built, but wanted the developer to commit to major road upgrades, such as a new roundabout. That led to this revised application with more housing to cover the costs of those upgrades.

A date for the decision to be announced has not been revealed.
