Falkirk shop could become student housing

An empty shop building in Falkirk could be turned into flats for students, after the council gave its approval.

Ghanshyam Property Ltd applied to Falkirk Council for permission to convert a building on the High Street. This used to be a branch of Wilko, but has been vacant for the past three years.

The idea is to transform it into Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) that would offer a range of amenities. These would include rooms for study use, a restaurant, lounge and a gym.

The main target of the PBSA would be those studying at the Falkirk campus of Forth Valley College. It has around 12,000 students and there is a lack of proper housing for them. This is a point that was made in the application, which was backed up by the college.

When it comes to advertising student accommodation in Falkirk, flyer printing by local shops can be useful. The printed Flyers can be handed out at nearby colleges.

Kenny MacInnes is the Forth Valley College (FVC) principal. According to STV News, he submitted a supporting letter that says:
“While FVC makes no commitment regarding the specific use of any planned accommodation, we support the concept of purpose-built student housing as it could address a key gap in the local market and benefit the wider community.”

A start date for the conversion is still to be announced.
