What's Happening in Falkirk, Scotland…

New Scottish banknote to feature Falkirk Wheel

The brand-new £50 note that will be issued by the Bank of Scotland during the summer is set to feature an image of one of the most notable visitor attractions in Falkirk.

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift to be found anywhere in the world, and its historic status will now be recognised with its inclusion on the new note. The image depicting the celebrated boat lift will be on the back of the £50 note, alongside one of The Kelpies – two statues of horse heads that represent the shape-shifting mythological spirits of the same name, which are part of Scottish history.

The Falkirk Wheel is located at Lime Road in the town, while The Kelpies statue can be found not far outside of it. Attractions like these are often promoted at local visitor centres using brochure printing supplied by shops in the area.

Speaking to Scottish Construction Now, the Scottish Canals CEO, Catherine Topley, said that she was very pleased to see such an iconic structure being displayed on the forthcoming note, adding:

“The note also complements the appearance of the Falkirk Wheel in the United Kingdom’s passports, recognising its significance to the nation’s infrastructure.”

The other side of the note will retain the current images of Sir Walter Scott and Edinburgh’s The Mound. It will be issued on 1st July.
