Hopes for new school in Falkirk

There are hopes that a multi-million-pound new school for youngsters who have complex and serious learning needs could be built in Falkirk, should an application for grant funding come through.

Falkirk Council wants to create this facility by expanding the existing Carrongrange High School site. It would turn it into an education campus with a new primary school that would be able to cope with children who have particularly severe learning disabilities. It has been deemed a project of vital importance as the number of young people in that situation has risen steeply.

Work to build this new school is expected to cost in the region of £23 million. The council has submitted an application for around half of that sum to the Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP) set up by the Scottish Government.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the council, its planning and resources head Gary Greenhorn stated that designs for the school were at an advanced stage. There are also services in the Falkirk area, like Stationery printers, which could prove useful to the school if it goes ahead.

Greenhorn went on to add that if the council gets the grant money, it will carry out a consultation with the public of Falkirk before moving forward with the project.

It is hoped that building work at the site can begin by Easter 2024.
