Historic Falkirk distillery to be extended

A distillery in Falkirk is set to have an extension added to it, after Historic Environment Scotland gave its approval to the Plans for the project.

Ian Macleod Distillers is intending to add a new building in a more modern style to the existing Rosebank distillery, as part of Plans to get it back into use making the celebrated whisky of the same name. Despite its historic reputation, the existing distillery buildings have been allowed to fall into severe disrepair and have not been in use for a number of years.

The need to do something about them became urgent when one of the warehouse walls fell in and this led the company to propose knocking down two of the current buildings and putting up new ones with zinc cladding.

It has worked carefully to ensure that the design of these does not clash with the older parts of the distillery, and argued that it was necessary to help regenerate the area. Graphic Design Services in Falkirk are sometimes called on to provide images showing what renovations like this will look like.

The company has also committed to retaining key features, including the chimney, and this was enough to persuade Historic Environment Scotland to give the work the green light. However, it has emphasised that these are the final changes to the distillery that it will support.
