Falkirk residents encouraged to become organ donors

Residents of Falkirk are being encouraged to help save someone’s life by signing up to the organ donor register and agreeing to donate life-saving organs when they die.

Organ donation has been something of a polarising subject for a number of years but as the need for donors increases, doctors and local health authorities are urging people in Falkirk and across Scotland to take heed of the appeal for new names for the organ donor register. Organ donation has often been promoted in the past with the use of poster, flyer and banner printing. Falkirk residents are being asked to speak to their loved ones about organ donation and to sign up via an online register.

The lead clinician for organ donation and transplants in Scotland is John Forsythe. John recently commented on the need for people to sign up for the organ donor register, saying:

“In our society, nobody likes talking about death. There is a taboo about the subject.

“However, those who have elected to join the NHS Organ Donor Register or who have spoken with their families about organ donation at the time of death, make a most generous decision which allows others to live.”

There are currently around 600 people waiting for an organ in Scotland. Almost all of the people surveyed about organ donation in a recent survey said that they would be happy to donate their organs after they die, but only 40 per cent of Scottish people have signed up to the register so far.
