What's Happening in Falkirk, Scotland…

Falkirk group calls for hedgehog help

A wildlife group in Falkirk has put out a call to homeowners in the town to do their bit to support an endangered creature by creating special ‘hedgehog highways’ in their gardens.

Falkirk Wildlife Conservation Group is urging people to commit to this scheme to make it easier for hedgehogs to get access to gardens. Creating the highways is a simple matter, with people only required to cut a hole measuring around 13cm in their fences. Doing this will enable the hedgehogs to pass through the holes and move from one garden to another in search of food.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Moira Grant from the group stated that these creatures were very close to becoming extinct, despite their popularity among people in the UK.

She then went on to add:

“One of the reasons they are not doing so well is because of lack of access to food, basically, as so many people’s gardens are fenced off now."

She pointed out that wandering at night for both food and mates was natural for hedgehogs but that closed off gardens restrict their ability to do both.

Flyer printing from shops in Falkirk can make it easier for community groups like this one to spread the word quickly about campaigns.

Allowing hedgehogs to access gardens is good for owners too, since they eat the slugs that damage plants.
