The centre is located in the proximity of Glasgow, but residents of Coatbridge and Airdrie are likely to be treated there. Approximately 80 patients will be treated at the centre on a daily basis.
Different cancers will be treated on the site, including prostate, breast and lung cancers. Politicians and health administrators consider that it is crucial that patients with these conditions have access to up-to-date medical facilities. Cancers can put a strain on the families of patients too.
Neena Mahal, the chairperson for NHS Lanarkshire, has told The Evening Times:
“Monklands Hospital is already NHS Lanarkshire's identified cancer centre where we host a number of cancer services. The new Lanarkshire Maggie's Centre is also located on the site. The radiotherapy satellite centre will be a welcome addition.”
In about a year and a half, patients will be in receipt of treatment at the centre. It will be important for all the local people to be made aware of the facilities when they open, and a printing company in Coatbridge could well be used for advertising purposes.
A couple of linear accelerators – machines that have the capacity to attack tumours – will be housed on the site. There will be scope for the installation of a third accelerator, if such a development is thought appropriate.
