Region backs City of Culture bid

North Lanarkshire is just one of the local authorities which is supporting a bid by Paisley to become a UK City of Culture.

The plan is that in 2021, Paisley will have the full backing of eight local councils. If it achieves the status of UK City of Culture, Paisley may benefit from using marketing services in Coatbridge. The whole of the city region of Glasgow has got behind the bid.

The head for Renfrewshire Council, Mark Macmillan, told The Gazette:

“We would like to thank our City Region partners for this significant show of support and their full backing of Paisley’s bid to become UK City of Culture in 2021.”

Emphasis is being placed on boosting infrastructure, job creation and innovation. The aspiration is that businesses will grow as a result of the intervention.

The Paisley bid hopes to focus on three goals. The cultural assets of Renfrewshire, the importance of local heritage and the potential of the area are to be stressed and highlighted.

The City Chambers of Glasgow has seen the eight relevant local authorities come together. This particular show of unity included the council for North Lanarkshire which hopes that an economic powerhouse can be created in Scotland. The idea is that it could be possible to attract more investors, residents, visitors and businesses to Coatbridge, Paisley and the rest of the Glasgow city region.
