The Plans submitted to the local council have already been given the green light, but because the blueprint for the store calls for the use of a small amount of council-owned land, the government does have the power to revoke permission.
If the proposal is successful, the new store would be built on the site of old warehouses on Carlisle Road and would create around 300 jobs for local people, as well as sparking regeneration and environmental improvements to the area.
New shop openings like this often call for a degree of promotional activity, with local Print companies offering everything from flyer printing to POS printing.
Coatbridge and Airdrie residents are set to benefit from the new jobs that the store would create, and will welcome convenient access to amenities at the new store.
Speaking on behalf of Asda, property communications manager Lynsey Ross said:
“Our application has been referred to the Scottish government, and may be called in by ministers for review.
“We believe the benefits the development would bring far outweigh the need for further review."
If the plans are given the go-ahead by the government, the store will be on track to open in 2015. The recruitment process for the 300 new jobs would begin several months prior to opening to allow time for the vacancies to be advertised and adequate training.
