What's Happening in Romford, Essex, England…

Romford YMCA adapts to pandemic

The YMCA in Romford is adjusting to the global coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 has made the management of Romford’s YMCA more difficult than normal. However, the team has upgraded its operation in response to the threat. Extra donations from companies have made the necessary transformation possible. Flyer printing can be useful within the third sector, particularly when an organisation has to communicate changes to service users.

Almost 150 residents occupy the YMCA within Romford. Recent corporate donations to the project have been made by McDonalds, TK Maxx, Waterstones and Lush. As a result, those staying in the building have enjoyed access to books, clothing, soap and fast food.

Obviously, residents in the YMCA have been affected by COVID-19. A dining area has been closed, while exercise classes are now conducted online. Viki Bainsfair told the Romford Recorder:

“We’ve been working really hard to keep our fitness provision going as much as possible. We know how important it is to keep your mental health strong during times of difficulty.”

Communal living has been suspended due to the pandemic as it would be inappropriate to share a bathroom unnecessarily during self-isolation.

Brian Cooke, a director in housing, made clear that the provision of room service has already been required. He pointed out that lots of the residents had been helpful during the crisis. For example, cleaning duties have been shared out in a different way because of the vulnerability of the usual staff.
