Renewed hope for post office in Prestwich

The group behind a campaign to save the main post office in Prestwich now has renewed hope of success with the confirmation that it is going to be sold off as a franchise.

This campaign is trying to save the post office at Kingwood Road and the latest announcement by the Royal Mail brings encouragement. It has revealed that it will sell over 100 branches, with this one in Prestwich being among them. This means there are a couple of possibilities for the post office – either a big franchising company assumes control or the postmaster takes it over.

Either option represents a better result than closure for a branch that is central to the lives of local people. The campaign to save it was launched towards the end of 2024 and supported by Christian Wakeford, the MP for Bury South.

Speaking to the Bury Times, he stated that:

“Any change comes with challenges; however, we recognise the opportunity this news presents by way of the branch remaining open although under new management via a franchise arrangement.”

Wakeford went on to add that credit for the victory should be given to the campaigners. Poster printing by shops in Prestwich is one of the ways in which campaign groups can spread the word.

The group will not have to wait long, as the new owners will take over during the autumn.
