Upgrades in Dorchester could revive landmark

Plans have been revealed for the refurbishment of a district in Dorchester, and a famous local landmark may be brought back to life as part of them.

These Plans are the work of Dorchester Town Council and they involve the Cornhill district. The council is keen to improve the part of it that lies at the top of South Street. Among other things that area is home to the water pump that stands as one of Dorchester’s most celebrated landmarks. It has been inactive for almost a century, but that could all change as part of these Plans.

There is an ongoing campaign to get the pump working again, which was started by the Dorchester Civic Society. One of the ways in which campaigns of this sort can be amplified quickly and easily is through the use of flyer printing by local shops.

It is possible that the aims of the Civic Society could be incorporated into the council’s Plans for the district. These include widespread tidying up, alongside new seating and paving stones.

A Dorchester Town Council spokesperson told the Dorset Echo that:

“The town council is generally supportive of the Civic Society’s project to bring water back to the town pump, but we’ve yet to consider any final designs.”

The Civic Society has commissioned designs that indicate what a revived pump might look like.
