Dorchester charity appeals for statue help

Plans by a Dorchester charity to erect a statue of a notable writer have hit a delay, and the charity has put out a call for help in meeting its target date.

Visible Women UK announced earlier this year that it would put up a statue of the author Sylvia Townsend Warner. Once in place, it would be the first statue in Dorchester of a woman who is not a royal. The idea was that it would be ready by December, so that it could be unveiled during the annual Christmas Cracker celebrations. However, the project has now encountered a snag that puts those plans at risk.

The problem is connected with the groundworks that must be completed before the statue can be erected. A hole has to be dug at the chosen site, followed by the laying of a foundation of concrete. This will ensure the statue is held in place securely.

One of the trustees for Visible Women UK is Anya Pearson. She told the Dorset Echo that local contractors had declined to help, adding:
“It’s surprising given the amount of development and money being spent in Dorchester that we can’t find anyone to help with a small but vital job.”

Flyer printing by Dorchester shops can help local charities to promote public appeals like this one.

The charity is asking anyone who can assist it to get in touch.
