Improvements planned for pedestrian crossings in Dorchester

Improvements are being planned for a couple of pedestrian crossings in the heart of Dorchester, which are expected to lead to greater ease of use and safety.

The crossings in question are those on High East Street and High West Street in the town centre. They were added to these streets two decades ago and are showing Signs of age.

Dorset Council has stated that they are approaching the point where continued maintenance is impossible, so it makes sense to give them a complete overhaul.

Once this work is completed, the pedestrian crossings will be fitted with cutting-edge technology. This will make the management of day-to-day traffic flows easier, leading to enhanced safety. The new technological systems will also mean that the crossings can be repaired in the future with less need for road digging.

Each of them will be out of action for a short period while the upgrading is carried out. The local council has the option of using Stationery printers in Dorchester if it needs to notify business owners about temporary disruptions of this kind.

Jon Andrews from Dorset Council told a local source that:
“Using the latest technology and installation methods, the new crossings will improve the experience for pedestrians and the smart technology will adapt to current traffic conditions to keep traffic flowing."

The work will run until mid-December.
