Dorchester to get new statue of author
A statue depicting a female author who lived and worked in Dorchester is set to be erected in the town, after the application for it was approved by the council.
Sylvia Townsend Warner was both an author and a poet, who had a career lasting 60 years. During that time, she published full-length novels, short stories and poems, with perhaps the most famous being her debut novel called Lolly Willowes. Many of her most celebrated short stories were written for the New Yorker, which published her work for over four decades. Now, she is set to be honoured with a statue in her home town.
The artist who will create it is Denise Dutton, and it will be cast in bronze. The chosen design depicts Townsend Warner sitting on a bench with a book, a cat at her feet. This is in reference to her lifelong love of those animals.
Dorchester Civic Society is behind the project, which sought to honour one of the town’s famous women. Townsend Warner was selected following a survey of the public.
When the local council wants to inform tourists about Dorchester landmarks, shops that offer brochure printing can help with that.
This will be the first female statue in the town that is not of a member of the Royal Family. Dorchester is already home to statues of authors like Thomas Hardy.
