Residents of Edgware rally round caf couple

Hundreds of people from Edgware have rallied round to support the couple who run a local café, as they seek to gain control of the property from the existing leaseholder.

The Par Café is located within Edgwarebury Park and has been managed by Met and Lily Gjata for the past three years, but with the existing owner looking to sell, their position has been placed in doubt.

Lily Gjata has indicated that she would be keen to take on the lease for the café, but if agreement cannot be reached with the present leaseholder, she would need to bid for it at market.

Now however, the local populace has come to her aid, with over 900 Edgware residents signing a petition backing her, and this has been presented to Helena Hart, the town’s councillor.

Community campaigns of this kind frequently make use of services like flyer printing in Edgware and similar places, to spread the word and garner support.

One of those backing this particular campaign, 53-year-old Alison Islin, said:

“I have been coming here for about 18 years. The café is so important for the park, Lily looks after everyone. The fact it has survived is testament to the strength of the community.”

The local council is not able to supply funding to keep the café open, as it is a commercial enterprise, but Cllr Hart has agreed to help the campaign.
