Housing development could be built near Edgware

A new housing development could be set to be constructed around a historic building not far from Edgware, with the Plans for it having been sent to Barnet Council for approval.

The housing developer behind them is Hill Residential, and it hopes to construct a development consisting of 114 homes. These would be divided between blocks of flats that vary in size from five storeys to two.

The location that is being proposed for the development is Whalebones Park, High Barnet, which is close to Edgware and home to Whalebones House. This building dates back to the 19th century and holds Grade II listed status. Both it and the park get their name from an arch found at the entrance, that was carved out of a whale’s jawbone.

The plan that has been put forward by the developer is to construct the blocks around Whalebones House, preserving it.

Local landmarks like this are important tourist attractions for the area, and brochure printing shops in Edgware can provide visitors with leaflets that outline their history.

It was the importance of Whalebones House that led Barnet Council to reject an earlier proposal to build houses in the park. A planning inspector from the Government determined that it would harm the building.

A date for a decision on these Plans is still to be announced by the council.
