Sir Geoff Hurst famously scored a hat-trick in the final, which England won 4-2 against West Germany, and was able to relate stories of the tournament to invited guests and staff, during the annual dinner and golf day hosted by Advanced Engineering.
The Basingstoke company, situated on Stroudley Road, holds this event each year as a way of thanking its staff, contacts, suppliers, distributors and customers. Advanced Engineering provides refrigeration and air conditioning products.
Its chairman and Sir Geoff joined forces during the event to present Merv Rees, an Ark Cancer Centre Charity trustee, with a cheque for £5,000. This was the firm’s contribution towards the campaign launched by the charity to raise funding for a Basingstoke cancer treatment centre.
The chairman, Barry Lea, told the Basingstoke Gazette:
“We’re very proud to contribute to such an important cause, and we would like to thank Sir Geoff and everyone who attended the golf day and dinner.”
Rees added that the charity greatly appreciated the efforts that the company had gone to in raising the money.
