Employees at the Hook branch of the national supermarket chain took it upon themselves to help Diabetes UK, which is Tesco’s chosen charity for 2014.
The challenge that the store chose to take on was focused around walking and saw members of staff taking 90,000 steps using special exercise boards which had been set up in the shop.
The Hook store's community champion, Sandra McFadden, spoke to the Basingstoke Gazette about the fundraising event, saying:
“The amount of support we got from the community coming in to the store was fantastic. A couple of kids were trying to get on the boards as well, and it was good to see so many people willing to talk about their experience of diabetes as well.”
Diabetes is a condition that affects a great number of individuals and families throughout the UK and events like this not only help to raise money that can be put towards care or research, but also help to raise awareness in smaller communities.
The store team collected money from customers on the day of the challenge, using specially decorated buckets. Posters were also created and put up around the area; it is thought that the organisers were helped by printing companies in Basingstoke.
Smaller local businesses often get involved to offer help at such as events. The total amount raised was £695.
