a major national centre for recreation and sports.
It is expected that the finished centre will lead to the creation of jobs for thousands of people in the area, as well as attracting equally large numbers of visitors to Basingstoke.
The new leisure complex would be the largest such centre to be found in the whole of the UK, and will see numerous facilities added to the current water-based and high adrenaline ones.
These could include a velodrome and aquadrome, nature areas, lakes and a shopping village – with the park due to be expanded to double its existing size in the process.
The developers in charge of the project – NewRiver Retail - are now encouraging the town’s civic bosses to lend the scheme their support, arguing that it will bring huge benefits to the local economy. Work is likely to start in 2018.
Andrew Finney, from Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, told the Basingstoke Gazette:
“It will create new jobs for Basingstoke. The town is already a great sub regional hub for business and leisure and we look forward to how this progresses.”
