Local charity helped by masquerade ball

A charity based in Basingstoke benefited from the generosity of local people recently, after a masquerade ball fundraiser brought in thousands in donations.

Anna’s Challenges is a charity providing support for youngsters suffering from Cystic Fibrosis and it organised the masquerade ball at Oakley Hall Hotel last month to try to bring in much-needed cash.

It proved to be a resounding success, as more than 250 residents – among them Miss Basingstoke, Nicola Ascroft – turned up to back its efforts.

This saw the charity, which was launched four years ago by Paul and Rachel Marke, raise £8,500.

The couple started Anna’s Challenges following their daughter Anna’s diagnosis with the condition, and the original aim was simply to raise enough to buy Basingstoke Hospital a particular piece of medical equipment.

However since then it has continued to grow and has now raised more than £110,000, which has been used for the purchase of games and toys for children, and hospital equipment, as well as specialist training courses for medical staff.

Speaking to the Basingstoke Gazette, Nicola Ascroft said:

“The charity masquerade ball was a huge success; their largest ball yet. It was wonderful to see so many people supporting such a fantastic charity, and how much of an effort everyone made with their masks!”
