Basingstoke to get its own Hollywood sign

The giant white-lettered sign in the Hollywood Hills is one of the most instantly recognisable sights in the world – and now Basingstoke is set to get one of its own.

Destination Basingstoke has announced that it hopes to construct a sign for the town similar to that in Hollywood. The group hopes that this will be a successful follow up to its Jane Austen bench plan – where benches by different artists were placed across the town as a trail that residents and visitors could follow.

This new project has been named Basingstoke Letters from the Untold Story. Felicity Edwards from Destination Basingstoke said at its launch that it would aim to explore the town’s connections using the memories of people who live there.

She also stated that a location for the sign had not yet been chosen, but that the organisation would try to find as prominent a spot as possible. According to the Gazette she went on to say that the process of securing funding had already started and added:

“Each large huge letter will be designed by a local artist. The design will be inspired from working in the community and with each other. We want it to be something people of Basingstoke can relate to.”

The sign is planned to be ready by 2020 and places providing graphic design are often used in the creation of projects like this.
