A meeting of the scrutiny committee for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council saw councillors give the green light to collaborating with the developer on the construction of a new retail and leisure park.
NewRiver Retail is the company behind the plans, which will see the facilities currently available at the site doubled in size, with the aquadrome undergoing a comprehensive rebuild and a designer outlet centre added.
The next stage involves NewRiver Retail committing to a formal contract with the council, enabling them to put in the necessary financing and commission the in-depth studies required as part of any planning application.
The council’s improvement, service delivery and finance cabinet member, Robert Tate, told the Basingstoke Gazette that it offered a real chance to provide people in the borough with excellent facilities, adding:
“This project is taking a significant step forward and I look forward to increasingly positive engagement with NewRiver Retail as the scheme develops and to hearing what local people think of the proposals.”
Local people will have the chance to state their opinions of the project, but if it goes ahead leaflet printing may well be used as a way of helping to advertise it in Basingstoke.
