Basingstoke leisure centre plans moving forward

Plans for a brand new leisure centre in Basingstoke are moving forward, with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council having confirmed that the project is in development.

The current facility in the town is the Aquadrome, but the local authority has contacted consultants from outside companies to come up with a vision of a new and improved centre to replace it. Although it is expected to be a more modern facility, currently the plan is for the replacement leisure centre to have the same name as the existing one.

Initially, the council was considering upgrading the old Aquadrome, but that proposal has now been scrapped. One of the main reasons was that it was felt the building was too small and restrictive for all of the facilities that the authority wants the new centre to be equipped with.

However, it is likely that any replacement centre would be constructed in the Leisure Park where the present one is housed. Among other things, that would ensure that it could continue to be used while work on the new one is being completed.

Banner printing by shops in Basingstoke would allow any new leisure centre in the town to publicise its opening with a large banner on the outside of the building.

The planned centre would include a thermal spa, cafe, a soft play area and exercise rooms.
