The Trafford Reading Challenge tasked young people from local primary schools in the area to read six Books in the summer school holidays, in a drive to get local children reading more and to help them become better acquainted with local libraries. Alex Williams, an executive councillor for the Trafford region, spoke about the benefits of the scheme recently to Messenger Newspapers, saying:
“By encouraging children and young people to read Books we are helping build strong foundations for their future.”
The pupils who successfully completed the reading challenge and read the allotted six Books over the summer holidays were presented with special certificates that had been produced using full colour printing. Altrincham Library played host to a special awards ceremony where children were given their certificates by Steve Hartley, an author. There was also a special guest in the form of the Bookstart Bear. By incentivising the reading scheme with rewards and the prize-giving ceremony, the scheme has seen a wave of pupils register to get involved with the reading challenge. In total, over 1,500 local school children took part in the scheme.
