The successful play 'Hobson's Choice' is due to receive a series of performances in Altrincham towards the end of April and the beginning of May.
The story is set in Salford in 1880 and embodies a humorous tale of the confrontation between a father and his daughters. Henry Hobson is a widower who has difficult relationships with his three adult daughters. They are all eager to find husbands in order to free themselves from the family boot making shop.
Hobson is an overbearing figure who spends much of his time drinking in the Moonraker’s Arms instead of focusing on his business. This means that the day-to-day running of the firm, and ultimately the family's future, is left to his level-headed eldest daughter, Maggie.
She herself is determined to marry William Mossop, a first class boot-maker, and it is an unlikely union that now threatens to destroy Hobson’s business, meaning he is forced into the position of having to make a choice.
The play was written by Harold Brighouse, and this production is directed by Ross Greenwood.
