Altrincham welcomes Wilde play

A famous play by Oscar Wilde is set to be performed live on stage at an acclaimed Altrincham theatre.

In a production directed by Nick Sample, renowned Altrincham venue the Garrick Playhouse will be hosting a performance of Oscar Wilde’s comic masterpiece “The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People” in the new year.

The first time Wilde’s internationally famous play was performed was at London’s St James's Theatre on February 14, 1895. Theatres and playhouses often use poster printing services to create one-sheets advertising new productions and listing plays. The story involves a farcical comedy where the main protagonists must maintain fictitious personalities so they can escape social obligations they find a burden. Created towards the end of the Victorian era, the play's key themes are treating the seriousness of the institution of marriage and satirising Victorian ways.

The play continues to enjoy praise from contemporary reviewers, who praise the play’s humour and Oscar Wilde’s artistry in his field. Many believe that its witty dialogue and high farce have made the work one of the most enduringly popular plays performed on stage.

Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest will be at The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse located on Barrington Road, Altrincham from Monday, January 16 to Saturday, January 21. The play is suitable for those aged 12 years and over.
