A choir from an Altrincham music education centre has secured its first professional gig.
The mixed singing group, from Altrincham's Music Place, will be the final act at the Manchester Jazz Festival on July 27th. The group will perform for an hour, singing works by the composer Richard Rodgers.
In an interview with the Messenger, the choir's manager, Lucy McElhinney, said that the opportunity was a special one and pointed out that the singers will be the only choir taking part in the festival. They will be accompanied by a band consisting of a trumpeter, a double bass player and a pianist.
McElhinney revealed that the choir would sing songs in a jazzy style and that the repertoire included several numbers that would already fit the bill, with the remaining songs being "jazzed up" to suit. The choir has 73 members including a soloist, Alison Owen, whom McElhinney describes as having a soulful and powerful voice.
The Manchester Jazz Festival lasts for 10 days and local printers will have been busy in the run-up to the event, providing services such as poster and banner printing. Altrincham Print firms may also be pressed into service in the future should the Music Place choir's success lead to more professional appearances.
