The NHS, or National Heritage System, is 900 acres of hectares of green space in the town of Oakville Ontario and is about to get a thorough re-examination since much of the proposed trail is focused more on recreation and transportation than conservation. The residents of Oakville, as well as city council, will become involved in an extensive process to make parts of the trail more environmentally friendly and sensitive.
Local Print companies may be asked to play a role in the new trail re-design, through brochure or flyer printing of the original and newly proposed trail design in public meetings. The North Oakville East Trail Design Subcommittee met recently to discuss proposed changes to make the trail less intrusive. Proposals include natural trails using woodchips or existing dirt surface to encourage pedestrian and conservational use rather than active transportation.
The Subcommittee has presented the plan to the public, but has yet to make a firm decision on how to protect the natural heritage system and protect wildlife. Some feel that putting the trail through the NLS goes against conservation principles and purposes in the first place.
An official planning map has not yet been drawn up for the entire NHS trail system, another extensive task that may involve Oakville Stationery printers in the near future. Planning, development and environmental groundwork need to be approved before creating the trail’s course.
Environmental issues and risk assessment for the area is in process and local printers may play a role in the publication of future developments of the NHS trail.
