The series is organized by the Downtown Business Improvement Area and is designed to draw foot traffic to Oakville’s downtown core. Over 15 musical acts will perform at various outdoor locations throughout downtown, primarily local bands and singers. The July 2 premiere featured Brian Barber in the Towne Square, Sedona Miracle at the corner of Thomas and Lakeshore, Colin Gray on the patio of Haven Home and Gavin McLeod at the Figaro Coffee House.
Future artists involved in the series include steel drummer Hulan Pierre, blues-rock guitarist Kyle Tapscott, local duo YASSiN and Sean Terrio, and vocalist Zohra Kassam. Multiple artists will perform across the course of an afternoon each week. Outdoor events like this, typically promoted through poster printing and social media, are a popular addition to downtown streets and help to provide exposure to local artists.
In a statement, TD Bank’s Associate Vice President of Social Impact explained the goal of the series and similar events:
"Through music festivals, our goal is to set the stage for connection, helping to amplify diverse voices at local and national levels while helping to foster a sense of belonging through music and lived experiences."
The Summer Music Series will run every Saturday in Downtown Oakville from 3 PM to 7 PM until August 27.
