Richard Bell Memorial Tournament returns to Oakville

Oakville will once again host one of Ontario junior hockey’s biggest tournaments later this month.

A total of 110 teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe will compete in the 2019 edition of the Richard Bell Memorial Tournament.

The tournament will feature Atom (ages 9-10), Peewee (11-12), Bantam (13-14) and Juvenile (15-18) divisions. Most teams will come from the Southern Ontario region, including numerous representative teams from the hometown Oakville Rangers as well as clubs like the Chatham-Kent Cyclones, Mississauga North Stars and West Niagara Flying Aces.

The tournament will also have international representations through teams like the Buffalo Junior Sabres, Frederikshavn Denmark, and HIFK Finland.

Each division will feature a pool stage, ensuring that each team plays at least four games, and a playoff to determine a champion. Local youth teams like this often depend on community effort, whether it be parents making early-morning drives, local eateries providing catering, or Print shops creating memorable logo designs.

The Richard Bell Tournament aims to give back to the community by donating its net profits to the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Since its creation in 2011, the tournament has raised over $240,000 in funds, which have gone to fill urgent equipment needs.

The tournament will run from December 27 to 30. Venues include Canlan Ice Sports, Glen Abbey, Joshua’s Creek and Sixteen Mile.
