Oakvilles Polar Bear Dip to go virtual

A chilling Oakville tradition that sees hundreds dunk themselves in frigid Lake Ontario water will return in a special digital edition to raise money for charity.

The Courage Polar Bear Dip is typically held at a set location on an Oakville Beach, and it involves a mass run into the water. According to local legend, the event began in 1985 when Gaye Courage encouraged her sleepy sons to jump in the lake to warm up. The boys invited a few friends to take up the challenge, and the event became a community tradition.

In 1995, the dip became affiliated with World Vision Canada, helping to raise money to provide clean water in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This year’s event will take the form of a socially distant challenge, with participants able to take the dip at any point along the lake’s shoreline. The virtual event will feature special activities that are typically held in conjunction with the live gathering, including a costume contest and live music.

Cold-water dips, often advertised through tools like poster printing, have become a popular activity across cold climates everywhere for people looking for a special challenge, with many also partnering with charitable organizations.

The Courage Polar Bear Dip will take place virtually on New Year’s Day 2021. Registration is now open online.
