Oakvilles Fall Classic to host figure skating stars

This weekend will see some of the world’s best figure skaters visit Oakville as part of Skate Canada’s annual Autumn Classic International. The event acts as an unofficial kick-off for the 2019-20 figure skating season.

The three-day event will feature competitions in men’s and ladies’ individual skating, as well as ice dance. Highlighting the line-up is medal-winner skater Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, who is also the defending champion of last year’s event He will be joined by his countrywoman, rising star Rika Kihira who won the Grand Prix Finals and Four Continents tournaments last year, and silver medalist Evgenia Medvedeva. Canada will be well represented by top skaters like Keegan Messing and the ice dance pair of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier.

While the event is a competition that will crown champions at the end, for the high-level skaters it will act as a warm-up for the upcoming Grand Prix season, and the road to the 2020 World Championships after that. Top figure skaters perform across the world, in both formal competitions and exhibition-style galas.
