Oakville to host author talk

A group of Oakville cultural organizations will be hosting a virtual talk by rising author Cherie Jones next month.

Jones will be aiming to publicize her new novel, “How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House”. A virtual ticket will also include a copy of the book. The novel, Jones’ first, tells the story of four people dealing with turbulent lives in Barbados. It has drawn comparison with acclaimed authors like Zadie Smith and Marlon James, and it has been highlighted as one of the most anticipated novels of 2021 by periodicals like Cosmopolitan and Oprah Magazine.

The novel’s description focuses on its relevancy, as well as its dynamic plot:

“How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House is an intimate and visceral portrayal of interconnected lives across race and class in a rapidly changing resort town, told by an astonishing new author of literary fiction.”

The author talk is a collaboration by the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, the Oakville Public Library and A Different Drummer Books. Jones will have a moderated discussion with Anuja Varghese, followed by a question-and-answer period with viewers. Ian Elliot of A Different Drummer will provide the introduction.

Virtual author events, often advertised through tools like poster printing, are a crucial part of the promotion cycle for Books and help expose local communities to new literary voices.

The event, called “In Conversation with Cherie Jones”, will take place through the Zoom platform on February 18.
