The event sends volunteers to dozens of green spaces and other natural sites around Oakville to help remove trash and detritus. Last year’s event was the biggest ever, with over a thousand volunteers participating to remove over 18, 000 pounds of garbage from 61 nature sites. Organizers hope to have an even bigger effort this year for the 33rd edition. Promotional material for the campaign emphasizes the good that can be done in a morning of work:
“The Clean Up campaign promotes awareness and respect for biodiversity, local nature and our trails, parks and waterways. Help beautify our local natural environment, protect wildlife and encourage environmental activism in our community.”
Plastic gloves and gathering tools are provided at the site. Events such as these attract high school students as they count towards the community volunteer hours required for graduation. Organizers often use methods such as brochure printing to attract volunteers and explain the larger purpose of the event. The Clean Up is hosted by local community organization The Independents.
The 2024 Earth Day Clean Up of Oakville Nature Sites will take place on the morning of April 20, starting off at Brook Valley Park.
