Oakville teen wins leadership award

An Oakville high school student has been honoured with the 2020 TD Scholarship for Community Leadership for his work bringing robotics to marginalized kids.

Nicholas Rampertab is the founder of FIRST Robotics, a program that provides hands-on experience with technology for patients at Toronto’s Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. He has also launched the Best Buddies Robotics program at his high school. Efforts like this, which often start with a graphic design, work to bring engineering and technology skills and opportunities to students who might not otherwise get the chance, including children and teens with developmental disabilities. Along the way, Rampertab won the Robotics World Championship in 2018 with his team the Pylons.

The TD Scholarship will provide up to $70,000 for post-secondary expenses, made up of $10,000 for tuition and $7,500 for living expenses each for four years. Over 25 years, the program has dispensed more than $25 million to 500 different students who have demonstrated both community leadership and academic success. Each year two students from each of five regions of Canada receive the honour, with Rampertab being one of the selections from Ontario.

Past recipients of the award include doctor and fundraiser Naheed Dorsani, environmental campaigner Etienne Lafortune, and human rights activist Megan Fultz. TD Scholarship nominations and applications for students starting university in 2021 will begin in September 2020.
