Oakville symphony to give passionate performances

This February will see the Oakville Symphony performing a special Valentine’s season concert, with an emphasis on music related to passionate love stories.

“Passionate” will feature rising star pianist Victoria Wong, who will perform Chopin’s first piano concerto. The orchestra will also perform a selection from Sergei Prokofiev’s score to the ballet version of Romeo and Juliet. There will be the world premiere of a new arrangement of Brahms’ Intermezzo op. 118 no. 2, done by Tal Samnon. The concert will conclude with a first-time suite of love themes from the work of famed film composer John Williams, including movies like E. T., Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Superman.

The Symphony, which is directed by Argentinian conductor Lorenzo Guggenheim, will perform the concert twice, with a Saturday night show and a Sunday matinee. The show is part of the Symphony’s 2024-25 season, which features classical and contemporary works themed around adjectives, with “Fearless” and “Vibrant” still to come later in the year. Classical shows like this often use brochure printing or educational lectures to provide greater context to the musical compositions featured. Promotional material emphasizes the season’s focus on emotions:

“We are thrilled to unveil an imaginative season filled with outstanding music and extraordinary collaborations. We welcome everyone to immerse themselves in the offerings of our 2024-25 season.”

The Oakville Symphony’s performance of “Passionate” will take place on February 1 and 2 at the AEG Liebherr Auditorium.
