Oakville residents to start the new year in refreshing style

The Courage Polar Bear Dip is taking place in Coronation Park on New Year's Day. This is the largest event of its type in Canada and proceeds will benefit World Vision's ‘Rwanda: Right to Clean Water’ campaign.

Participants pay a fee to register and then raise pledges from friends, family members, and co-workers. Those who collect more than $100 will be entered to win prizes.

Those taking part will receive a free swag bag and hot coffee will be served. Activities before the dip will include a costume contest, where awards will be given for Best Individual Adult and Youth and Best Group. A shuttle will be available all morning from the South Oakville Centre.

It is necessary for those taking part in the dip to have a spotter who will supply them with a blanket, towels and a hot drink. It is also recommended not to stay in the water longer than three strokes.

Following the dip, there will be an after-party at the Tin Cup, beginning at 3:00pm. It will feature the music of Glenn Groves and food specials; 10 per cent of the food proceeds will go to World Vision.

Organizers of the event are still looking for volunteers to help with advertising efforts. This involves hanging Posters and placing lawn Signs. Oakville printing companies are usually asked to provide these materials.

The Courage Polar Bear Dip will take place in Coronation Park on January 1. The costume contest is being held at 1:15pm and the dip will start at 2:00pm. For more information, or to volunteer, call 905-469-9377.
