Oakville residents prepare for Roots of Freedom Festival

The Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) and the Oakville Museum are getting together to host the two-day Roots of Freedom Festival later this month.

This will be the seventh year for the event, which recognizes Oakville's participation as a destination of the Underground Railroad.

The Festival will be held at a different venue on each day, with first evening’s activities set to take place at Oakville Town Hall. Speaker Karolyn Smardz Forst will be providing a talk called 'I've got a home in Glory Land’. There will also be African drumming from Muhtadi and the gospel music of John Campbell.

The Oakville Museum will host the second day of the Festival. Activities planned for the evening include a guided tour of downtown Oakville, a community drum circle and tours of two exhibitions. The two related exhibitions are ‘Freedom, Opportunity and Family: Oakville's Black History’ and ‘Underground Railroad: Next Step, Freedom’.

The Festival is expected to help educate those who attend and will put the spotlight on the remarkable history of the area. Guests may also have the opportunity to take home some reading materials in the form of Flyers, Booklets and Brochures about the Underground Railroad. This literature could be provided to the Museum by Oakville printing companies.

The Roots of Freedom Festival is being hold from October 23-24. Admission is free but donations will be gratefully accepted by the Museum. For more information on opening times and the scheduled activities, call 905-338-4400.
