Oakville residents invited to take part in Emancipation Day celebrations

Oakville was once an important part of the underground railroad, and Oakville Museum’s Emancipation Day plays tribute to this fact.

The date of the festivities, August 1st, was chosen because it was on this day in 1834 that slavery was officially abolished in all parts of the British Empire. The afternoon will be celebrated with dancing, music, crafts, and a variety of other family friendly activities. Those who come out are reminded to bring along a picnic lunch, as well as a folding chair or blanket to sit on so they can enjoy the fun.

Food will also be available for purchase from an ice cream truck and mixed grill barbeque that will be available on site. There is no charge to take part, and the public is invited to relax in the cool breezes coming off the lake while they watch the performances.

The day is being presented through the cooperation of the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton and the Oakville Museum. It will take place at the museum’s Erchless Estate site, located at 8 Navy St, on August 1 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Printing services can be used to create a variety of products that promote events like this to the surrounding area.
