Oakville remembers with parade and ceremony

November 11 marked Remembrance Day across the country, and a memorial service was held in the square on Trafalgar Road in Oakville.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to those who served in the military, both past and present, and to pay respects to those who paid the ultimate price in service to their country.

The event started with a parade, where veterans and others marched to the square. Following that, there was an hour-long ceremony with music and the traditional laying of wreaths in remembrance. The former military members were joined by Halton Police officers, current military members, firefighters form the Oakville Fire Service, scouts, cadets, and other representatives.

The ceremony was especially poignant for many people this year, as it marked the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, the 75th year since the start of the Second World War, and the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Many of the men who were present had fought in World War Two, and some had been peacekeepers or served as part of Canada’s contribution to NATO missions.

As well as being a meaningful day to many, Remembrance Day offers an opportunity for people to learn more about the history of their country. Stationery printers can play a part by creating programs to be handed out that both explain and inform about the proceedings.
