Located at the historic Erchless Estate, the Oakville Museum has officially re-opened for in-person tours, offering a personalized and directed experience for small groups.
The estate was once home to the family of William Chisholm, the founder of Oakville, and is known for its view of Lake Ontario. The museum allows visitors to step back in time and witness 19th century fashion and décor. It also features a collection of images and artifacts from throughout Oakville’s history.
The re-opened museum is offering intimate tours for up to 6 people from the same household. Each tour will take approximately 45 minutes and aims to provide insight into Oakville’s history from founding to the present day.
A special exhibit on Black history in Oakville, including the town’s role in the Underground Railroad, will be available to view on the second floor.
The museum has not been idle during its months of closure, offering digital exhibits and programming, as well as encouraging residents to donate artifacts of their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. To address social distancing, museums across the country are incorporating digital methods into their educational outreach, alongside time-tested tools like in-person exhibits and brochure printing.
The Oakville Museum is currently open on afternoons from Tuesday to Sunday, with special evening tours available on Thursday. All visits must be booked in advance.
