Oakville gallery to focus on textiles

Oakville Galleries is putting an emphasis on the arts of textiles this spring, with a new series of workshops as well as an ongoing exhibit.

The four-part workshop deals with mending textiles, which provides both practical value and a chance to make aesthetic changes to existing garments and other textile items. Participants are to bring their own items to be mended, along with matching material if they want an “invisible” mending. Materials will also be provided for those looking for a showier patch. The classes will run for four weeks, each dealing with different materials and techniques, with participants able to sign up for one or multiple classes. The course will be taught by Toronto-based maker and educator Gabrielle Trach.

The workshop is meant to complement the current Gairloch Gardens installation ‘Wolf Tones: A Many-Sided House’. Launching in January and running until May 13, A Many-Sided House is the first Canadian exhibition of American artist collective Wolf Tones, which works in a variety of media to create physically unique objects from household and handmade materials. The exhibit and workshop reflect a broad concept of the art world, which includes media such as graphic design and textiles, as well as more traditional Forms such as painting and sculpture.

The ’Mending with Gabrielle Trach’ textile workshop will take place between April 16 and May 7 at Oakville Galleries. ‘Wolf Tones: A Many-Sided Hose’ is ongoing at Gairloch Gardens until May 13.
