The drive will take a different form in 2020, as firehouses are currently closed to the public. The Oakville Public Library will instead be stepping in, with all libraries serving as drop-off spots, in addition to Oakville Community Centres. Donors are also encouraged to consider gift cards or cash donations to make Packaging and distributing gifts easier. The firefighters will also be accepting cards or toys that are mailed or shipped directly to them.
Kurt Merriman, Toy Drive Chair, expressed confidence in the success of the fundraiser:
“In this time of tremendous need and challenge, I am confident that the generosity of Oakville residents will help ensure every local child can receive a gift this year.”
The Oakville Professional Firefighters Association (OPFFA) has been holding a toy drive every year since 1993. Past drives have delivered thousands of gifts to local children in need, and the OPFFA estimates that need could be up to 30% greater this year. It particularly welcomes donations aimed at youth aged 11 to 15.
Poster printing is often used to advertise charitable initiatives like this.
After kicking off at the Virtual Santa Claus Parade, the toy drive will continue to run until December 18. The OPFFA encourages those interested to organize their own sub-drives within their communities and publicize the call for help.
