The Oakville Film Festival (OFF) will be making a return this June, holding its 10th edition as Oakville’s premiere independent film fest.
This year’s movie line-up includes over 100 films from around the world, including 13 Canadian features, as well as a robust line-up of short films. The opening night will be designed to coincide with National Indigenous People’s Day, featuring the Canadian Premiere of Indigenous-created sci-fi movie The Beehive, including a traditional opening ceremony, food, shopping, and a question-and-answer session with director/writer Alexander Lasheras and the film’s producers. Other features include heartfelt Canadian drama The Year of the Dog, British aviation documentary Lancaster, and French-Canadian film Notre Dame de Moncton.
The festival will also include screenings of short films, including a showing dedicated to filmmakers from Oakville and the Halton region. Film festivals, often promoted through flyer printing and social media, provide audience members a chance to watch rare films and interact directly with filmmakers. The OFF accomplishes this through its “red carpet” premieres, which include question-and-answer sessions, musical and dance performances, and short films before the main feature. The festival will also offer an online-only component with limited-time screenings of exclusive films.
The 2023 Oakville Film Festival will take place from June 21 to 27, with virtual screenings available until the 30th. Screenings will take place at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Five Drive In, and Film.ca Cinemas, with tickets for the latter venue available free for people under 21.
