What's Happening in Oakville, ON…

Oakville film fest to give power to audience

Billing itself as Oakville’s newest film festival, the Crowd Picks Film Fest will be taking place this April, with an emphasis on audience voting.

The event aims to be accessible and affordable to enter for young filmmakers, showcasing up-and-comers from Ontario and beyond. The one-night festival will include a screening of “mini” films of under 10 minutes in length, followed by short films between 10 and 13 minutes long. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the directors on stage. The audience will be able to vote through their favourite films on their phones using a QR code, and the top vote-getters in each category will receive awards and a small cash prize at the end of the night.

The full line-up of films includes titles like “Feeling the Apocalypse”, “Worthy of Honour” and “Love Me, Fight Me”. The festival also aims to be a networking event for young artists and film professionals, allowing them to make connections with industry veterans. Creators at festivals like this one often use business cards and video portfolios to help showcase what they have to offer. Crowd Picks is open to films in any genre, including animation, documentary, experimental film, and fictional feature film-making.

The 2025 Crowd Picks Film Fest will take place on the evening of April 7 at Film.Ca Cinemas in Oakville.
